Julian Assange and Wikileaks

      It's almost three years since I first became aware of the work of Julian Assange and the group of people who have joined his inspired commitment to break the censorship blockade. This has been the most significant blow against the efforts of the wealthy classes to prevent equitable access to a decent life for all the earth's people. Created by several brave journalists committed to transparency, Wikileaks has published important leaked documents, such as the Rules of Engagement for Iraq [see my The Secret Rules of Engagement in Iraq], the 2003 and 2004 Guantanamo Camp Delta Standard Operating Procedures, and evidence of major bank fraud in Kenya [see also here] that apparently affected the Kenyan elections. Wikileaks has upset the Chinese government enough that they are attempting to censor it, as is the Thai military junta.       Now censorship has extended to the United States of America, land of the First Amendment. As of Friday, February 15, those going to Wikileaks.org have gotten Server not found messages. Today I received a message explaining that a California court has granted an injunction written and requested by Cayman Island’s Bank Julius Baer lawyers. It seems that the bank is trying to keep the public from accessing documents that may reveal shady dealings. Wikileaks was only given a couple of hours notice “by email” and was not even represented at the hearing where a U.S. judge took such a drastic step attempting to totally shut down an important information outlet. The result was this totally unprecedented attempt to totally wipe out the existence of Wikileaks:       “Dynadot shall immediately clear and remove all DNS hosting records for the wikileaks.org domain name and prevent the domain name from resolving to the wikileaks.org website or any other website or server other than a blank park page, until further order of this Court.”       There have, of course, been previous attempts by the U.S. Government and others to block publication of particular documents, most famously in 1971 when the Nixon administration attempted to stop publication by the New York Times of excerpts from the Pentagon Papers, leaked by Daniel Ellsberg. But trying to close down an entire site in this way is truly unprecedented. Not even the Nixon administration, when they sought to block publication of the Pentagon Papers, considered closing down the New York Times in response.       Keeping a population ignorant is a critically important tool for social oppression. The above information, which I posted on my 'old' website on 22 April 2008, was but another effort to seek truth and understanding. But her honesty apparently offered me an opportunity to learn the current perspective of some Israeli Jews who live in the occupied parts of Palestine . . . Hatred to spare. One of the most disgusting people I have ever met is an American believer in the absolute correctness of Adolph Hitler’s ideology, which is based on an unshakeable hatred of Jews, i.e. all people of so-called Jewish ethnicity. Clearly this degree of hatred requires a belief in the correctness of the concept of ethnicity. For someone with this belief, it’s clear that “once a Jew, always a Jew”: that identity is indelible. As an American Jew I’ve had no trouble accepting that category as my “birth-stamp”, if not my “birth-right”. Simple enough, my parents and grandparents were all Jewish. My so-called “ethnic identity” was never a question. I may not have been “kosher”, but I sure as hell was Jewish.       For many years I remained largely ignorant of the inhumane, absolutely unacceptable policy of the dominant Zionist ideology, which was to seize the territory of Palestine to make it into a Jewish State. What that meant, as this 1948 photograph [1] shows, was first of all, drive the Palestinian Arabs off their land by any available means. It ought to be recognized that people of so-called Jewish ethnicity are not at all different in their inherent qualities than any other ethnically identified group — neither better nor worse. All peoples are subject to the same range of emotions — of love, hate, tenderness, ferocity, and so on. Which ones predominate at a particular moment depend on the circumstances of that particular time. And they are all authentically human. That is as true of David Baillie, the American “Nazi” whose behavior fills me with disgust, as it is of every human being.       I’ve been aware for a long time that among the people I come into contact with, many of whom are almost consumed by their hatreds, an especially frequent target of their virulent hatred is the category “Jews”. Why is this so? What kind of image does the term “Jew” cause in a normal person’s mind?

       My efforts to communicate seem to have been badly thwarted. For years I have maintained my website at the Boston campus of the University of Massachusetts. With the fetishization of security, which I am opposed to, I have become more and more marginalized by the operation of the U of Mass/Boston computation facility. My belief is that in the long run we must build a global culture of trust, sharing, and love, and that our efforts should be directed towards that end. With these beliefs it has become increasingly difficult to function in the prevalent atmosphere, in which distrust and deceitfulness have become largely the norm. My most immediate contact is with many friends -- sadly also many former friends who have cut off contact with me -- who are locked into what I see as the tribal values of many, perhaps most, Americans of Jewish ethnicity. On many important issues I am more in agreement with some of the beliefs of a friend, David Baillie, of Boston, who also holds, to my dismay, many American Nazi beliefs. We have been in communication now for the better part of a year, but have not managed to come to a common understanding of the basic reason why American society is collapsing. We both believe that Jewish Americans are playing a terribly destructive role, misguided by their supposed tribal loyalties. David wants them all to be deported. My view is that the would-be Zionist colonizers of Palestine should be relocated and Palestine returned to its indigenous peoples. It could be achieved without anyone being punished and all the people involved being helped to secure a satisfying life. I have written about this on my website. 1. I undertook to review the new book by Eric Walberg, Postmodern Imperialism: Geopolitics and the Great Games. It is a formidable task for me. My interest in Walberg's study was aroused because I believe the historical trajectory of the dominant global culture is directed towards universal immolation, and I believe that Walberg's understanding of the cause is basically correct. I will post my review with the dateline 2011-09-01.

3. I am assembling a record of my geographic locations in the time period from my elementary school years (Jan 1930 - Jan 1938) through our lives in Mexico. I'll post this page with the dateline 2011-09-03.


4. I reprinted the text of an article by Témoris Grecko from the 6 Sep 2011 issue of the daily Mexican paper, Proceso, which I translated into English. Grecko deals with the crisis in which Israeli society is immersed. It is on my website with the dateline 2011-09-06.


5. This posting combines the angry demand, 'Jews out of Palestine! Back to Brooklyn, Hoboken, Vladivostok, the "Borscht Belt" ' with a moving call for universal brother/sisterhood from the wonderful loving clarity of an Arab friend, J.B. Bargouti. Its "must read" response from a Palestinian-American friend is truly a "must read". It will be on my website datelined 2011-09-08.


6. and 7. In this 2-Part article by the Mexican critic José Steinsleger, the blindness and stupidity of the Israeli Zionist project is mocked. As far as I know these first appeared as contributed opinion pieces on the back covers of La Jornada on Sept 7 and 14, 2011, titled “Palestina, México y América Latina/Parts I and II (y último)”. I used as a title for the second part, The Intifada that's coming, Part II. I'll dateline them 2011-09-09 and 2011-09-10.


8. As I was floundering -- trying to find a way to publish my material to be available to a large group -- a friend suggested I might try blogging. This inspired me to look into some modern FTP possibilities. Thus far I haven't made use of them. For the time being I've datelined that information 2011-09-13.
